Osaka has its own working-class identity distinct from Tokyo's - irreverent, food-obsessed, proud of its dialect. The Edion Arena (officially Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium) sits between Namba and Tennōji in the Naniwa ward, well-placed for visitors planning to eat their way through Dōtonbori afterward.
Near the arena
- Dōtonbori↗ - Neon canal-side restaurant strip with the famous Glico running-man sign.
- Osaka Castle↗ - Reconstructed keep with an excellent history museum and a moat park.
- Tsūtenkaku & Shinsekai↗ - Retro-futuristic 1950s neighbourhood around the Tower.
- Den-Den Town↗ - Electronics, anime, and games district - Osaka's Akihabara.
- Universal Studios Japan↗ - Including the famous Super Nintendo World expansion.
Local specialties
- Takoyaki↗たこ焼き - Battered octopus balls - the unofficial Osaka snack.
- Okonomiyaki↗お好み焼き - Savoury cabbage-and-batter pancake, cooked on a teppan in front of you.
- Kushikatsu↗串カツ - Skewered, breaded, deep-fried anything. Communal dipping sauce - no double-dipping.
- Kitsune udon↗きつねうどん - Sweet fried tofu over noodles - an Osaka invention.
Getting there: 5-minute walk from Namba Station (multiple lines converge there).
